Across grades four to nine, math classes at the Calgary Girls’ School focus on building girls’ mathematical confidence and capacity.
Through a problem-centered approach, girls use a variety of strategies to develop solutions. The use of teaching strategies such as the Think, Pair, Share model, mini white boards, collaborative problem solving and practice are encouraged in the classroom, building creative and critical thinkers and in turn, confident mathematicians.
With a wide range of concrete materials housed in all classrooms, girls are asked to demonstrate their understanding concretely, pictorially and symbolically. Common language helps support students on their mathematical journey from year to year. The focus in our mathematics programming is to see mathematics as more than a set of steps or formulas to be memorized. Instead, students at CGS develop deep conceptual understanding of mathematical concepts and, in turn, discover that mathematics is memorable.
