Things to know
01. We are a public (charter) school, not a private school.
02. We do not charge tuition.
03. We teach the Alberta provincial curriculum.
WHAT WE DO DIFFERENTLY.
CGCS is unique because our Charter mandates a focus on students in grades 4-9, where research shows girls-centered learning to have the highest impact (particularly in STEM subjects).* These years are also key in promoting self-confidence, resiliency and healthy relationship building skills.
Alongside the provincial curriculum, we include our Go-Girls program. We developed this model to support students in fostering self-confidence, self-awareness and healthy body-image, and to encourage discussions around social issues and resiliency.
WHAT DOES GO-GIRLS LOOK LIKE?
In Go-Girls, students engage in learning activities that analyze and deconstruct cultural and societal norms, messages, and values. As they learn to thoughtfully question the world around them, students develop the skills they need to actively decide who they are, who they want to become, and what kind of society they want to live in.
The ultimate goal of Go-Girls is to encourage students to be reflective around their own developing values and beliefs, empowering them to explore their identity and their roles in their diverse communities.
Under the guidance of skilled specialists, all students at CGCS have opportunities to participate in authentic and rich Fine Arts programming, including courses in Visual Art, Music, and Drama.
Informed by the Alberta Program of Studies, our Arts-based courses emphasize both the creative process of making, as well as precision in the end product or performance. These complimentary classes are foundational to the CGCS experience, as students discover passions, make choices, build their identities and find places to belong.
Our extensive extracurricular theatre, band, and choir programs offer students opportunities to develop their performance skills, work in ensembles, engage in purposeful endeavours, and work alongside artists and experts.
At CGCS, we explore the world through Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM). This hands-on approach provides students with the opportunity to:
- solve meaningful problems
- experiment with new technologies
- make connections between STEM subjects
- develop varied and relevant skill sets
Our STEM learning spaces include:
- E-learning Lab: includes 3D printers, coding, and robotics resources
- Maker Space: includes tools, loose parts, and space for creative play
Creative and analytic disciplines are taught together, often alongside guest experts, to capitalize on the connections between STEM fields outside the classroom walls.
The goal of our Physical Education program is to foster a healthy self-image, a strong sense of self, and positive self-esteem by participating in physical activity. Our classes are rooted in movement and encourage students to develop physical self-awareness through active game-based lessons.
To encourage physical activity as a lifelong pursuit, we pride ourselves on offering off-campus field trips and guest presentations that include but aren’t limited to:
- Muay Thai
- Rock climbing and hiking
